Biomonitoring and evaluation of permethrin uptake in forestry workers using permethrin-treated tick-proof pants.
2014
We conducted a randomized case-control trial to analyze uptake of the insecticide/arcaricide permethrin in wearers of permethrin-impregnated and non-impregnated pants in German forestry. Eighty-two male workers were each equipped for a 16-week period with permethrin-treated (test group) or with non-treated work pants (control group). Pants with or without lining to protect against cuts, obtained from two different distributors, were worn in each group. Urinary permethrin metabolite levels were measured by GC-MS/MS before, during and after wearing of the pants. Permethrin uptake was calculated using additional questionnaire data. In the control group, metabolite levels in the range of enviro…

Quantification of exposure to dioxins and furans in a cohort of workers of a herbicide producing plant in hamburg, FRG
1992
Abstract To assess the exposure to PCDD/Fs of a cohort of 1583 workers of a herbicide producing plant in Hamburg, FRG, investigated for cancer mortality, measurements of PCDD/Fs in fat tissue (n=48) or blood (n=64) were analyzed according to work histories in a subgroup of n=112 male workers. In a multiple regression analysis the time of work in the production of 2,4,5-T and 2,4,5-TCP, for the latter especially before 1957, correlated well with the levels of 2378-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). For most of the higher chlorinated isomers time of work in the thermic decomposition showed the strongest effect. The results confirm that the developed indicators are good proxis for exposure to…
Returns to Schooling in Spain: How Reliable are Instrumental Variable Estimates?
2002
This paper studies the ordinary least–squares (OLS) and instrumental variable (IV) estimates of the returns to schooling for male workers in Spain. OLS estimates are often biased due to the endogeneity of schooling, measurement errors or omitted variables. Proper IV estimates correct this bias. The reliability of family background, natural experiments (based on changes in the education system and season of birth) and the availability of a college in the province is checked using Spanish data. The results suggest that background and college availability are valid instruments and that the IV estimates of the returns to schooling are higher than OLS estimates. These results are in line with th…

Assessment of oral hygiene habits, oral hygiene practices and tooth wear among fertilizer factory workers of Northern India: A Cross sectional study
2015
Background: The association between oral hygiene habits & practices and severity of tooth wear lesion varies from community to community and also from occupation to occupation. The present study was conducted with to assess oral hygiene habits & practices and tooth wear among fertilizer factory workers of Punjab, India. Material and Methods: A descriptive cross sectional survey was conducted among 965 male workers who were aged between 19–58 years, who were the workers of fertilizers factory of Bathinda, India. An interview on the demographic profile, oral hygiene practices, and adverse habits followed a clinical examination for recording the Tooth Wear (Smith and Knight Index 1984) using T…
